Boxing day 2020

Good Evening,
I wonder if anyone could help, if you normally get paid double time for working a bank holiday would you receive double time for boxing day 2020 as it falls on a Saturday and we have a substitute day on Monday 28/12/2020. Or would you just get double time for the substitute day?
Thanks in advance.

  • The bank holiday is Monday so that's what would attract double pay.
That assumes that your contract mentions bank holidays (or possibly "customary days"),
Working on 26 December this year should mean being paid whatever is the normal rate for working on a Saturday.

26 Dec isn't bank holiday boxing day this year. Today (Monday) is the bank holiday.
Forty and fabulous, well that's what my cards say....

In employment law there is nothing special about bank holidays. There is no specific legal right to have bank holidays off or to any extra pay if you opt to / are required to work them.

So, as others have said, this is entirely a contractual matter.

If your contract unambiguously says you will get double time for bank holidays, then you should get double time for the Monday (which was the bank holiday). Then you should be paid whatever you would normally get for working a Saturday, as the 26th Dec was not a bank holiday in 2020.
