Chrome OS game controller

Hi,
My young granddaughter received a Chrome netbook for xmas. I purchased a wired game controller for her to use on the big day, but it is not being recognized on it. She tried on a pc & it worked fine. I have been trying to work out which one to buy her now but it is so confusing with the chrome OS. I have been using PC's for years but not familiar with the Chromebook.
So what I am asking here is can anyone recommend a game controller that is guaranteed to work with chrome OS or point me in the right direction what I should be looking for, wired or wireless to give me a choice.
You should have seen her face when it was not working, I need this fast.
