I wonder if they are reverting to a two-day weekend permanently or if starting on Fridays will resume after the upcoming new year weekend.

As all of the shops are closed on Friday 1st Jan, it was going to be difficult to include it in the weekend offers.

They are open in England.  
(I know Scotland can be different - you had a bank holiday on 1 January before we did in England.)
