Missing NI years.

Just looking for a bit of quick advice here for my partner who is in her early fifties.
Though its probably early as she won't reach state pension age for quite a while yet, her personal account online shows her missing a few consecutive years NI credits.
Our child was born in july of the earliest year, her older child was 16 in april of that year, but that year 2008 and also the following year is showing as having no NI credits though she got child benefit for our child during that time.
We have taken it up with HMRC and they sent us a form (forget the name) that asks who took care of the child during those years, which of course myself and my partner did.
Looks like a mistake that happened somehow.
So I am assuming she will get full Ni credit for year 2009-2010 but what happens for year 2008-2009 as it seems there is a break from april to july, older child 16 in april and our younger child not born until July, is it possible to pay for those in between months only to take it up to a full years NI credit?
Many thanks for any info
