New job, BR code - do I need to tell HMRC?

Hi,
I am leaving my current employer officially on 27/12/2020 but will actually start my new job on 22/12/2020 (untaken annual leave being used). However, I've noticed on HMRC personal tax account that in addition to my current employers salary payment for December, my new employer (unexpectedly - my onboard documents told me I wouldn't be paid until January) has submitted a pro-rata payment. This has inevitably resulted in a BR code for the new employer.

Am I right in saying once my new employers processes my P45, HMRC should just automatically pick this up and my existing tax code (1282L) should move over to the new employer, or will I have to ring HMRC and tell them myself?

Sorry, I'm a bit stupid when it comes to tax so I just want to know where I stand.

Thanks in advance.

Littlekins.

    Oops, I mean current. Doh.

  • You just need to hand your P45 from your old employer to your new employer.

The new employer will then use the details from that when they pay you in January.

There shouldn't be any need to involve HMRC.

Yeah, you get your employer to fix it.
EDIT: Correction. If your tax code is fixed this tax year, you should get the refund in your next pay, without having to wait.
If you overpay, you'll get a letter from HMRC later next year about the refund. Of course that doesn't help if you need the money now.
