Sharing to Instagram story?!

Hi, I'm wondering if anyone can help... lots of the insta competitions say you need to share to your story.
I have googled guides, which say press the paper aeroplane on the post, then choose "share to story"... but I don't see this option at all. Does anyone know why?
Thanks and apologies if I am being old & dim. I suspect I am... and I'm missing something really obvious.

I am also new to Instagram and had this same problem!
I do not have the option to share to my story when I'm using my laptop. I can only get this option on the app on my phone. 
No idea if that is the correct answer, but I had to download the app and I can only use that for the IG comps. Which is annoying because I use my laptop for all the other comps. 
On a side note, I've not had any luck with IG and am finding most of the comps a bit dodgy... I'm not feeling that it's worth my time so will probably invest in other stuff rather than faffing about liking, following, sharing etc... 
Good luck though. Hopefully someone else will come along with a better answer!

No idea if I'm correct but I asked someone as I could not see how to share,respond to posts,input a date of birth,post anything and they told me it is because Instagram only works fully by app on a smartphone

You need to do it on the app. Some features are available in a browser but realistically you'll need to download the app to enter most IG comps

That's what I was told too. No option to share to your story on a laptop.
I keep my phone next to me when comping and use the arrow under the photo to "Share to my story" when required. It is a faff tho' and I really cba when they want you to follow and tag all their friends, then go to those friends' pages and share their comp post too.
