Pension carry over question

  • I think the op is planning on making a relief at source contribution so this won't reduce their taxable income but would reduce their adjusted net income, which is what the Personal Allowance is calculated on.

They would get a vastly increased basic rate band as well.

For reference the only pension I have is a 30 year old one where I contracted out of serps and now resides with Re-assure worth 36,000 and have not paid anything in for around 29 years

Have you checked that this pension will still accept new contributions ?

In any case it will inevitably be a rather old fashioned pension , probably even without on line access. You should think about opening up a more modern pension , which will be fully on line and probably with cheaper charges and more flexibility when you come to take it.

  • Thank you for your answers - I am "Reassured" and relieved that the existing pension will count.
I have already opened a new Vanguard pension and paid some in and will wait closer to the time to pay the rest.

Vanguard say it can be 6-8 weeks before they receive the relief at source - does the relief at source need to be in the account by April 5th to count? or does it not matter.

It doesn't matter. Just when they get yours.
