Hi MFW2026,
Good luck with your journey. We got our mortgage when I was 21 too, and have moved (4th house now) and done extensions etc. It's only really the last couple of years we've really started focussing on reducing the mortgage. I haven't found a clever way to adjust the mortgage calculator, I tend to just do estimates of what the balance will be with 10% overpayment.

Thankyou everyone. Your all doing great and on this forum so you are on the way to financial independence. Our house needs a lot of work on it (new kitchen, bathroom) none have been replaced since before we bought it- I’ve even had a hole in my kitchen ceiling for 10 years... I need to at some point also divert money into DIY and getting these jobs done but everything so damn expensive. Decided this will be our forever home. I’ve learnt yes it’s small and rugged 😂 but it’s ‘enough’ taken me a while to accept and truly believe that. Rather than move to a bigger house and paying a mortgage until I’m 70 I want my money from life energy in later years spent of enjoying myself and not working forever.I’m reading a good book at the moment (your money or your life by V.Robin). It struck a cord when it says are we working for a LIVING or working for a DYING? Are we working extra hours or in a job we hate to fulfil our dreams of luxuries (new cars every few years, new clothes all the time, fancy holiday) or to not have those things and enjoy retirement. Made me realise I don’t need all the luxuries and diverting that cash into the mortgage to have that financial independence with no mortgage to pay when I’m older and less stress worrying about how to pay it when older is a lovely feeling of security.Poor dad rich dad is also another great book I’ve read recently and next in my list is mind over money by C.Hammond.Nurse striving for financial freedom2

Have you considered trying to fix the hole in the ceiling yourself? I have found that YouTube is very good for helping with that kind of thing. It may not be perfect but you might be happier with it than you are now.
Good luck! Look forward to keeping up with your progress!1 -
Keep reading , i have read so many great books that have really helped me to stay motivated and i have learnt such a lot from them too ..Keep up the good work !1

Sorry for some reason notification just came up for your message 🙄
March £79,587.47 - 16yrs 3 months left
Hoping to overpay the 10% annually now until 2026 and save up what will be outstanding- approx 30k or get offset for remainder of mortgage.
Gonna be tough now with inflation and everything going up in price.
In two minds also re moving or staying put. Being MF would be amazing however 3 bed terrace feels so much smaller now both kids off to high school.
Aim is to continue to OP and do the house up and decide later in the year.
I’m happy that between this month and last month the OP took off 7 months off the mortgage 👍 Seems to be speeding up now which is really motivating.
Been following your diary. You are doing so well!
