Happy Easter everyone not a bread recipe but I make Jamie O flatbread s all the time quick and tasty only equal amounts of SR flour and yoghurt I normally do 200 grams I use Greek as we always have it in but Natural works too with 1tsp baking powder you can baste them with garlic herb butter when cooked we have them with Curries, Casseroles, Gyros,Mac cheese etc or you can make thinner for wraps or have used as pizza bases too. Need to get back on my frugal shopping head have been so good all lockdown but brought extra Easter bits I didn't really need and gone overboard on extra bits for family who we can now see in garden including more alcohol back to better planning and keeping to lists this week.Frugal challenge 2025

Re making bread I have been using plain flour to make bread in my machine following advice from Frugal Jo on Youtube and it works so well. Just wanted to share in case anyone else interested. I use and put in machine in this order- 320ml water, 1tbsp veg oil, 1tsp salt, 1tbsp sugar, 1tbsp dried milk powder, 500g plain flour, 1heaped tsp dried yeast. The recipe amounts are from my breadmaker recipe book for a basic loaf and it makes a lovely sandwich loaf and/or toast if it lasts that long. Thank you to FJ for her flour advice though.11

I see this as a frugal tip but some may disagree. We encourage the kids to eat their chocolate eggs for breakfast 😏, saves on a meal🤣. It’s now a much loved family tradition.

I've just scoffed my egg. Never tried milk chocolate salted caramel before, it was the best I've ever tasted and absolutely divine. Think I'll have to cancel lunch and eat a proper meal later. Happy, full and feel thoroughly spoilt, what a lovely gift.
@the_cross_rabbit, my parents did the same when my sister and I were young, I had completely forgotten.7 -
I'm on my quest to save on the cost of electric and oil.
I must get DH to look at the central heating programmer for the house. I came downstairs a couple of days ago and the temp of the kitchen underfloor heating was 22 degrees and that was at 4.30am - far too warm. We have different ideas on how to use the central heating. He works on the idea of it all being remote, He zones the house and sets the time of day and temperature for each zone. All very commendable but 22 degrees in the middle of the night - stupid I say. No wonder the electric bills are so high. I'm hoping that by using wood on the woodburner (called an ironheart) and using its oven i can save quite a lot. The wood is free so it's silly not to make use of it.11 -
Day 3 of 17 NSDs
Quick check in on day 3 of my 17 day challenge. We went for a mammoth walk/bike round the park, avoiding the temptation of the ice cream van as we had taken some Easter treats with us.
I am roasting a lovely bit of lamb in the oven, which will have lots of leftovers that I will transform into other meals tomorrow. No money spent, feet up with a film now whilst dinner cooks. I confess it hasn’t felt like a challenge yet, as spending money doesn’t come naturally to me nowadays, let’s see how I am fairing on day 14! X

Made a victoria sponge today. Filled it with own made blackberry jam. Cheap dinner with a YS turkey that's been in the freezer since xmas. Cheap veg either YS or easter special offers.
Trimmed the dog myself, that's a saving of £25 at the groomers.
Free entertainment, went for a walk and made the most of the lovely sunny day. Haven't bought any chocolate this easter.
Planted another row of beetroot.14 -
Cor, I'm stuffed! Cooked a chicken in the slow cooker after watching a Frugal Money Saver video on UToob last night
Now have stock to make soup with tomorrow & enough meat for another two meals at least.
Whilst it was cooking, I made two teddies from woollen jumpers, just need stuffing & the hand sewing now.
Kids to bath tonight, then I can put my feet up & watch Line of Duty at 9pm & do some knitting!Use it up, wear it out
Make do or do without!
If you see someone without a smile, give them one of yours 😃

@Tightpants24 I've a compact breadmaker which I only use to make dough as don't like a tall loaf. Mostly use it for pizza dough but it can also bake cakes, and can make jam & marmalade in it. If I had to buy another I'd get a full sized one to make a proper farmhouse style loaf in it.
I agree with everyone that homemade bread gets eaten up quicker because it is so nice! Cost wise I think it depends on what flour brand you buy. Supermarket bramds are cheaper and do a good job. Dried yeast wise I get the 5g packs rather than a tin as it has to be used up within a short time. The dough won't rise if yeast goes off. I think it is cost effective to make your own but I do find it hard to get into a regular baking habit. I've got sourdough starters ready but too tired from gardening! Winterish weather tomorrow will be good day for a baking 😊

I usually get fresh yeast from Mr Ts when DH wants to make bread but that's not very often as he prefers sourdough which is what he made today for DD1.
