If I were the employer I'd want to keep the details so that I could show how I had paid an employee in the past in case one ever tried saying I hadn't paid into one of their accounts.  I'd think it part of the records needed to be kept beyond the accounting year in which the payment was made.

Of course some would say that is keeping too much information.  And I'm not the OP's employer.
