Click on the link and drag it to the very top of the screen - in my case to the right of the "Humming Bird" tab where the + sign is.  This opens the link (without the skim link), so you can quickly check for the bird, before closing the tab and moving on.  Hope that explains it! x

You can use linkclump, which uses a shortcut key to open several links, to open single links as well - I find this the quickest method
