Employment advice - treated unfairly?

I'm after some advice.
Following a successful year in my job role, I am now being given additional responsibility that I don’t want. Nobody else in our team is being given this extra workload.
I have raised my concerns, and my employer has advised me to identify unpriority areas that I’d like to offload in order to ‘make room’ for the extra work. But frankly I don’t want to offload my existing job, as I enjoy those elements and by doing so, I’d have a different role to my team colleagues.

There are also some big discrepancies between what I’m being told in terms of what is going to be expected of me in the new role.

any advice on what my options and rights are would be appreciated.

i am no expert, but i believe that your employer has the right to ask you to do functions that you are not familiar with and that is different to what you have been doing.  they have the right to move staff around departments and roles for example.

it depends on what sort of things they are asking you to do.  if you were working at a desk job, then i don't think it would reasonable for an employer to move you to a physical job like shelf stacking.  but if it is still within the same sort of area, then they do have the right to change your role.

Your options are very little. The employer wants a particular thing done, you said it added to much and they have asked what you'd like to not do that isn't this particular thing. They have been very reasonable.

You only have 1 years service so have very little protection if they wanted to get nastier about things.
Don't trust a forum for advice. Get proper paid advice. Any advice given should always be checked
  • If they're asking you to do things that are legal and reasonable then you should do them, if you don't want to then leave and find another job where you don't have to do these things.

Options and rights: to resign if you don't like what is on offer.
  • Thanks for the replies, I’ve actually worked there for 3 years.
in terms of the ‘offloading other work’ - is it not their responsibility to identify the non priority areas?
  • It should be a compliment that they are asking you to take on extra responsibility as they are trusting you.  They are also being a good employer in letting you suggest the tasks which you find less interesting and they could then either agree or not that they were "unpriority".
Try to look at the positives in this situation.

they are giving you the option to give up what you like the least, so this is better as you have some sort of control.  i am sure they would be more than happy to take some of the responsibilites away from you themselves if you asked them to do it for you rather than you make a choice.

teams at work can be in different forms as you could have a team of mixed roles in a company.  the team doesn't have to be of similar roles employees.
  • The options you have are either getting on with that are asking and paying you to do or leave. It really is that simple and just to add there is no such thing as unfair at work unless you are talking about discrimination due to certain protected characteristics
