Notice period advice

Basically long story short, I’ve been homeless since February, drowning in debt not helped one bit by the virus. No help just reduced hours and a reduced wage, rather significantly. Got depressed, found a new better job. Just give my notice, it’s a weeks notice I thought it was a month. My new employer thinks it’s a month, can I ring my new employer and say it’s 2 weeks so I can have a week off to get my bearings and sort my head out? Just don’t want the new employer ringing my old employer(reference which I put down) and for me to be caught out.
What should I do?

Ring your new employer and say "I can start earlier, would that be possible from your end?" And give the date you'd like to start. Because it may not be, for all sorts of reasons, if they are not expecting you for a month.
If they want you to start in a week rather than two weeks, ask if you can book some leave early on, but I'd start rather than irritate them.
Best of luck.Signature removed for peace of mind1 -
Is the offer of the new job unconditional? Was it not dependent on the receipt of satisfactory references?mike19902010 said:Basically long story short, I’ve been homeless since February, drowning in debt not helped one bit by the virus. When you resigned thinking you had to give one month's notice, did they say "you only have to give us one week, so we'll say goodbye next week"?0 -

and Grant, it’s for a care home they are in urgently needing staff went for my training and told them its most likely a months notice which they said is fine. Found out it’s only 1 weeks notice and next Sunday is my final working night. My reference I put is my current employer0 -
If it is for a care home I think they should have got two references (not just your current employer) and a DBS check. (I used to do HR for a Nursing Home and would expect the requirements to be the same for a Care Home.)mike19902010 said:

Have they confirmed that they have received the references. Have you completed forms for them to get the DBS check done?0 -
The only references I can give are from people from my current employment. I’ve had this job nearly 2 years so one would be an employment reference and one would be a character one. I written them down on the application form, and yes filled stuff in for the dbs checkGeneral_Grant said:

The Home will need to receive satisfactory responses from the DBS and referees before you can start working - unless they can arrange for you to be working in the presence of another staff member at all times.mike19902010 said:
