If you have a ‘smart meter’
If you have a smart energy meter in your home, your supplier could potentially disconnect your supply remotely without needing to access to your meter. However, before they do this, they must have:
- contacted you to discuss options for repaying your debt, eg through a repayment plan
- visited your home to assess your personal situation and whether this would affect you being disconnected, eg if you’re disabled or elderly
If they don’t do this and they try and disconnect you, make a complaint to your supplier.

But you're talking about non-payment, and that's usually dealt with by the compulsory installation of pre-payment meters, which will disconnect you when your credit runs out.The PM has vowed to cut carbon emissions by 68% by 2030 based on 1990 levels. How do this think this will be achieved? Gas usage will be rationed. Exceed your allowance and your gas will stop, simple as that. When your Smart Meter Says NO, you can't argue.Much the same for electricity, except that rationing won't be by overall usage but by peak demand. We're not building sufficient new generating capacity to replace old power stations as they get decommissioned, so something's got to give. To keep the lights on between 4pm and 8pm will mean Time Of Use Tariffs and Block Tariffs as the deterrent nto keep demand below the available supply, but Load Limiting and Load Shedding remote disconnection will be the longstops. Smart meters have these facilities built in, they're all in the specification. Were you really gullible enough to think that saving households a mere £11 per year was the only reason behind the £15.9 billion cost of the smart meter rollout? The pressure will come on industry to minimise its use of gas - the brewery I used to run, used frightening amounts of gas.2 -
