Amazon's Packaging

A technophobe neighbour asked me to buy them Outlander 1-5 on DVD which is a fairly heavy set, with Sony being as tight as a duck's behind the slipcase it's housed in is the thinnest bit of cardboard you could find, Amazon sent it in a box the same length and width as the set and about a inch higher with a scrap of parcel paper inside.

Result 2 dented corners and a crease on one side.

Also ordered two Lego sets as a Christmas gift totalling £103, again sent in boxes with a scrap of parcel paper and both squashed with creased fronts and edges.

Back in July I picked up a small, cheap Lego set which was sent in a wrap around card mailer and that was completely crushed.

Purchased some chain (thick chain for the garden) and received a completely smooth and flat wrap around card mailer, the chain had obviously slipped out very early on as there would have been creases in the mailer from transit if it had been there a while.

3 times they posted 18kg bags of dog food by Hermes just in the bag with a label on and which were marked as damaged and being returned, Hermes never returned them so Amazon didn't refund until I asked them.

Another DVD box set was crushed on the back corner.

I do buy a fair bit and problems are relatively rare but it seems if the item is fragile but not obviously so their packing just isn't up to the job.

Perhaps Amazon aren't up to the job anymore. I've had two exercise bikes on order, the first never arrived so refunded. The second 'got lost'. How can a large item 'get lost' with a tracking number to follow its progress?

  • Maybe Amazon have taken on board previous complaints about "over packaging" things, and have gone too far in the other direction?
  • Well anything I have had delivered from Amazon in the last year or so has been well overpackaged I would say.

Nah.  I've had a calendar delivered today in the biggest box known to man.  Overpackaging is very much the norm here.

If you aren’t happy with the service buy from somewhere else
  • I empathise, as we have found the delivery service to not be as good as it used to be. A birthday present went to my upstairs neighbour and his goods were delivered to me. I haven't had a problem with the packaging, but so many issues with Amazon of late, my household have agreed to stop using them.
