Would it worth appealing or just put this down to a bad experience and to learn for the future?

I would just move on. Lenders rarely flex their risk models on an individual basis.
  • Most manufacturer finance companies will only allow 90 days before rechecking you. Sadly, with the lead in times for a new car being longer than that (for the most part), you can expect a couple of checks.

I've been leasing new cars for years, and from my personal experience, when the application is put in with the sales team a credit check is done there and then. If approved the car is ordered to specification. There's never been any further checks, from a credit referencing perspective. There is a chance your application slipped through the net. I remember years ago when I was young and silly I had several defaults on my credit report. I applied to RBS for a credit card several times over the space of about a week. All applications were declined based on adverse credit history expect the final one which was accepted with a £3.5k limit. Perhaps it's something similar or due to COVID they carried out an additional review of your credit files and the decision was overridden.
