Old Mortgage style student loan and self employment income

Hi
I have an old mortgage style student loan which I have been deferring. I have income from employment which is under the repayment threshold and a small amount of self employed income from 2 sources. If I make a loss on one of these sources of income, can the gross income before the loss be used to contribute towards my earnings? This would then push me into the repayment threshold, despite the loss. Thanks for any advice.
