Day to day bike maintenance

Some of the responses on another thread are emphasising just how little I know about looking after my bike.  Is there a simple (very simple) guide that will tell me what to do until my local council reinstates its bike maintenance course?

You tube is good - start with the basics and build from there.  Clean, oil and pump up tyres first. Then punctures, adjust brakes etc. Then replacement stuff, brake pads, cables adjust gears, etc.

Bikes are relatively simple objects, so don't get put off. Many of the tasks are easier than people think, if they get over their anxiety, with a lot of the tools being standard household ones, spanners, screwdrivers and Allan keys. Then you begin to add in bike specific ones chain tools, cassette whips and a bike stand.
  • i learned everything I know from investing in a cycle maintenance course, the same company make youtube videos which are equally helpful but slightly less in depth and time to watch theyre called cycle maintenance academy :)

Did you buy the bike new?   There is always a handy book with them on the the basic service checks.   A good bike shop - ie an independent one (were the staff ride what they sell, and walk about with oily hands) will give free advice esp if buying the tools from them.
