Discharge mortgage

I had a mortgage with Santander that has recently been paid of.
I have received a letter from Santander asking for solicitor details to discharge the mortgage.
I have never had to do this with any other mortgage.
I assume this will cost more money.

What country is the property in? Your other posts suggest you're in Northern Ireland - procedures vary in each of the UK jurisdictions.

Yes, if you engage a solicitor then you'll need to pay. But there's no actual need to discharge it until the next time you're doing something with the property i.e. selling or remortgaging it, at which point you'll have a solicitor anyway.
