Council Tax refund for overpayment.

My mother, who is now in care, was diagnosed with dementia several years ago but was paying her council tax up until she went into care in 2018. Can I claim back a refund for those years she had dementia, living alone with carers visiting. If so, how do i go about it please?

How much council tax was she paying? Full rate? Did the council know she was living alone? Why do you feel a refund is due? More details needed.

Unless you have POA only your mother could claim a refund, if one was due.

Backdating of council tax exemptions or discounts in respect of council tax SMI is possible - whether or not it's an easy task or not depends on the council. Some are easier to deal with than others.
