How do I repair my credit?

I've had problems in the past with credit card and loan payment (due to unemployment).

I successfully paid off all my debts (in full) about a year and a half ago, and no longer have any debt. However, I'm still being refused credit (including simple things, like upgrading my bank account to a current account from a deposit account).

Does anyone have any views on how I can it back up to scratch again? I'm not looking for loans, but thoughts have turned towards getting a mortgage lately.

Thanks for any help.

Depends on what problems you've had. If you've had court orders (time orders) or CCJ's they'll be on your file for a number of years. Other than that anything else on your file should be comments/observations.

Would suggest you contact the institutions who have turned you down and ask which credit reference agencies they used (by law under the consumer credit act they have to tell you). Once you know which one(s) you can write off to obtain a copy of your file(s), there will be a fee, but only a couple of quid.

It could be that your credit file isn't up to date and may not reflect the fact you've actually repaid the debt in full. To settle outstanding debts would improve your credit rating. If you've changed address recently, or ticked the box on your electoral register to stop your details being available to access by credit reference agencies, that will affect your credit rating too.
:idea:I got an idea, an idea so smart my head would explode if I even began to know what I was talking about:idea:

This post may get a better response on the Debt board. Your effort of getting out of debt could be a useful example to those who are now in your past situation. Check your credit reports from Experian and Equifax if you have not done this recently. This will reveal the size of the problem. You are allowed to add riders to what is there. Mention your bank as their are smaller, less global, institutions who may give you a current account status.

Well said ,the previous poster. I can't see the name in edit mode. I am slow with keyboard input due to a near knackered keyboard and so many different words to choose from and an ignorance of punctuation ^.
