Thanks for your response Dave. I understand your concerns. Personally I think we could have some shortages but I'm hoping not as bad as Venezuela.
To answer your question, canned food is very long life so I wouldn't worry about the dates but just use in rotation. It's not easy to find good deals on non-perishables but I would recommend trying places like Home Bargains or Farmfoods or buying from Aldi or Lidl.2 -
Im with everyone else so far, its not so much the date, its the storage that has to be spot on. Once a can starts to rust on the outside, you risk contaminating the product it contains so damp garages and sheds are not ideal. I use the cupboard under the stairs, its cool, dark and dry ( no outside wall ). But an unused bedroom or even storage boxes under beds and on top of wardrobes are good spots
Flour I freeze for 24 hours before putting into Lock n Lock. Lock n Lock is expensive but I always buy in the sales. Once you have had an infestation of weevils, and have had to dump a load of dry goods, you start taking better precautions
Rotation is a must as well.I work along the same lines as @PipneyJane. The open and in use product in the larder, the spare in the kitchen cupboard - the hoard under the stairs. Once the kitchen cupboard spare is used, I restock from the hoard and add to the shopping list. Theres no panic on buying it there and then, so Ive time to find it at the best price possible
I have some of the same concerns as yourself. I work in food preparation for the cook chill sector and I see the prices we are paying direct from the market - in some cases double what the consumer is paying in the supermarket. There will be a point when supermarkets are not going to be able to offer those low prices, esp if we have the crop failures we are having world wide. Also being in NI we are at the blunt end of Brexit, we are hearing warnings of severe food shortages next year because businesses are not knowing what they are supposed to be doing when it comes to us.
Now I need to get my family to start eating tinned food and I could stock pile more but unfortunately we eat very little from cans and jars. Even when the shelves were empty for weeks back in March, it never effected us in the slightest other then dried lasagne sheets weren't seen again till October . But I notice my food bills are getting higher, Ive had to lose a few things from the menu unless I can get yellow stickered and both me an he are heading into retirement so will be on a fixed income in the not to distance future
