Unlimited beer in the office sounds an absolute recipe for disaster for a myriad of reasons.
In my office alcohol is often bought in on the day of the Christmas party, but that's it.
We used to go the pub occasionally for lunch and a drink or two was acceptable, but now its largely frowned upon. In fact our complex did have a bar many years ago, it was abused by a few and has since been turned into a coffee shop.Make £2023 in 2023 (#36) £3479.30/£2023

sounds like the first place i worked for when i left uni. it was all paid for as well so it was great. i didn't go on trips abroad with them except on one or two occasions, and they were all paid for and were done during the working week, so it meant i had to go into the office to work, while they were off on holiday! they even paid for your partner to come along with you.
it was a great place to work for a graduate as it was in mayfair in london, so i got to go to all the expensive restaurants and bars around the area for free
however, the downside was that it wasn't actually free as it had to be paid for somehow, and it was indirectly paid for by staff salaries kept well below market rates. after 3 years there, i realised i was better off not going to these places and get a better salary elsewhere.0 -
Basically they want to own you - body and soul. If you don't join in, you'll be labelled a non-team player.6

this is the worry with these sort of companies, is that you get left out as they are all so clicky, if you don't participate.[Deleted User] said:Basically they want to own you - body and soul. If you don't join in, you'll be labelled a non-team player.1 -
It is quite odd that this was mentioned "recently" at an interview as I would imagine most of the social activities, whether in or out of the workplace, are largely curtailed in order for the workplace to be COVID-compliant.
It does sound like the type of business that is seeking to recruit recent Graduates and create a "follow-on University" culture.2 -
Pretty simple. If you don't like the sound of the culture, don't work there.ushjr said:What are peoples thoughts on this?
I recently had an interview at a place where they were going through all the great things about working there. Every week they have team lunches and company nights out. They have a ping pong table, yoga and unlimited beer in the office. They have weekends away and ski trips. There was maybe more, but it was putting me off working there if anything. I don't mind the odd team lunch or occasional drink with colleagues, but I certainly don't want to be going on a ski trip with them.
My last company had things like that, though nowhere near as extreme as the place I mentioned above. Fortunately there wasn't any pressure to partake in these activities so more often than not I didn't. We had free beer in the office in the last hour on a Friday but I didn't drink it because I don't like drinking beer without having my dinner first. It was mostly drunk by the same few people who would try and drink as much as they possible could in an hour.0 -
They were asking for people's thoughts. I know those are yours, but hardly helpful.Dox said:

Very much like my husband's place of work but they have no issues if people do or don't partake.
He doesn't do any evening socials or weekends / holidays away but does like the pop up lunches and beer Fridays.
Occasionally they hire the cinema and all go to watch a film. Sometimes he goes, sometimes not.
I guess he's lucky that it isn't compulsory and no problems at all if you don't join in.Forty and fabulous, well that's what my cards say....0 -
Equally as useful and helpful a thought as:[Deleted User] said:
