Fixed Term Contract query

A family member volunteered at a local school whilst taking their A Levels and was placed on their supply list when they reached 18, working in school whenever they returned from University.
Upon completing their degree they were given a Fixed Term Contract for 1 year. They are now on their 3rd Fixed Term Contract.
In total they have been in school for 6 years now.
Is there a point where you are classed as a permanent member of staff because of the time you have been there or do you have to apply and be given a permanent contract?
Does supply work count?

However, as this is working at a school, are the contracts continuous or are there breaks - for the long summer holidays for example.

There is no real difference, after 2 years you get employment rights.
The key one is redundancy if they don't renew.
Even with breaks a series of contract can still count as continuous.
The earlier supply work may not count depending on the contract.

The contracts run continuously but the supply work was not contracted and was only when she returned on breaks from university.
