Overpayment overview

Hi all. I have never really been shown how to calculate mortgage rates and total debts, so relied on advice to steer me through. My mortgage has 6yrs left and my monthly payment is roughly 389 a month. However, I have been paying 400 every month to try reducing the overall debt. I thought about paying more but would be hit with some fees. Is this tiny monthly overpayment really helping?
