on-line security gone mad !

When I tried to buy a camera on-line they took the c/c payment and then would not post my camera without a copy of my passport and a utility bill !
Is this normal ? I have not seen this before.
It's like trying to open an ISA account.
Can this be right ?

If it’s an expensive professional camera, running into thousands of pounds, they may feel they’re compelled to do this under money laundering legislation. Otherwise, it’s probably just that they’re trying to protect themselves from fraudulent card use.

If you’re not happy giving copies of the the requested documents, simply cancel the order. Do this in writing, e.g. an email. If you don’t get the money returned promptly, tell them that, under distance selling regulations, they have thirty days to return the money from the time you cancelled the order, otherwise you’ll start a chargeback. The distance selling regulations are for shops within the EU. If they’re outside the EU, just say you want your money back within a reasonable period of time.

They said I could have a refund, so I am waiting.
It just seems so unnecessary, and a case of of 'too much information' for a £700 camera.
