Rather than focus on the loan why not speak to someone like women's aid they will be able to support you and point you in the right direction. A local charity/support group would be even better.
Don't take out a £17k loan for something like this it could cripple you for years if they even lend it

Is there also the risk that the legal assistance could cost more than the £17k?

But I agree with the other posters, look for legal aid or support from a charity etc., as I don't think you'll be eligible for the loan.

Do you not have legal cover as a part of your home insurance (presuming you have such)? If so, could this be an avenue that you could pursue?

as soon as you get the loan, that will make you ineligible for uc as the capital is over 16k. you will be eligible for uc again after youve transferred the money over to your legal counsel, then your capital will be below 16k and can get uc.

Stop it now, the very idea someone on UC can get a personal unsecured loan for £17k in the first place is beyond ridiculous.
