Salary Cuts, but also hiring

Because of the impact of covid, my company is trying to cut salaries by 10% across the board. However, they are hiring an additional person to do the same role to mine on a different area of the product. I’ve just seen the job advert and the upper end of the salary range is more than I’ll be on after the cut. I also have more responsibility as I took on product management responsibility earlier this year. I was expecting to negotiate a rise because of this, but have now been hit with a paycut. Putting the emotions to one side for a moment, is it legal to cut salaries whilst also hiring people in the same vein?

Legal, yes.Apply for one of the new vacancies.1

Upper end of the salary range probably means they’re not going to be offered that as they walk in the door, so unlikely to be on more than you currently.1

Perfectly legal. They can need more people, whilst still not having enough money to pay everyone's salaries.' <-- See that? It's called an apostrophe. It does not mean "hey, look out, here comes an S".0

A salary range is just that: a range. Applicants always think they'll get the top end right away, employers almost invariably think otherwise. What your employer is doing is perfectly legal and may be necessary for the business's survival - perhaps focus on that, at least for now?Googling on your question might have been both quicker and easier, if you're only after simple facts rather than opinions!0
