If you buy a Nexus you really need to work out a maintenance plan. I build my own wheels so when my first hub went I imported a new one from Germany for about £90. When that went I repeated the process. After that I was looking to buy the maintenance tools which were stupidly expensive too. I was spending a fortune on a system that was rubbish anyway. My hybrid with Deore gears is much better and far cheaper. I expect a bike shop would charge a fortune to put a new hub in or charge a lot of labour to repair a Nexus hub. People think they will be a bit clever and get something a bit different but there is often a reason why conventional is better.

I have a SRAM 3 speed hub on my Dahon, works great. It's based on the old Sturmey Archer units that have been around forever. I have derailleur gears on all my other bikes that run on 7-10 speed cassettes. The oldest is a 1994 mountain bike. Over the past 10 years I have taught myself how to strip, clean, replace and repair from looking at youtube videos and reading articles from Sheldon Brown's website and Park Tool's website. I would not attempt to dismantle a hub gear myself, but have no qualms taking apart derailleur systems. I realised that a lot of bikes are quite poorly set-up from the shop and you can often improve the performance by getting things correctly adjusted yourself.
If I were buying new I'd stick with derailleur gears and learn how to service them yourself. If you don't want an oily trouser leg you can buy bikes with chain covers of various types. I just use a set of velcro hi viz reflective straps from Halfords that cost £1. My dad used to tuck his trouser into his sock.
    My latest project. https://www.cyclechat.net/threads/diamond-back-to-basics.268436/
