Employer asking for health and social care number?

employer is asking for my health and social care number and wandering why their asking for it ? Are they allowed to ask for this information? I’ve found nothing when I had a look on Google.

They'll need your National Insurance number so they can pay you and any income tax and national insurance contributions can be deducted from your salary by HMRC (Her Majesty's Revenue and Customs). Perfectly normal, everyone has to do that, it's a legal requirement and therefore it's allowed.

Had to think of a reason they would need it so your best bet is to query why they are asking.
I don't think it would be necessary even if they offer health insurance.

I have never been asked for my NHS number whilst in employment. I am not sure if I could find it even if I was, although I definitely know I have an NHS card somewhere.

only reason i can think of is that you had given them permission to contact your GP to access your medical records, in which case they would need your NHS number. otherwise can't see why they would need that.1
