Although they made an error, you still have to pay because the terms of your contract was that you would pay for the car upto the point of the contract ended. So they were entitled to most of (but perhaps not all) of your payment due on 29/06/2020.
The comments I post are my personal opinion. While I try to check everything is correct before posting, I can and do make mistakes, so always try to check official information sources before relying on my posts.

it wasnt  fixed term contract we could end at any time - the final payment was based on what we had paid and the cars value at sale -
  • Then surely you owe 29 days' worth of the £239, given you owned the car for all but two days of a month, which appears to run from 29th May to 29th June?  What's that?  £223.58

Bear in mind a payment taken on the 29/06 isn't necessarily for the period immediately before it.

In my experience it's rarely if ever the case. It's usually 2 weeks between payment becoming due and being taken by direct debit.

Imo they should fix the damage to your credit file, but the outstanding balance is your liability. This is because their mistake did not cause the money to be due. You would be due to pay it had they not made the mistake.
