Sainsbury's won't refund postage

My understanding of the CRA 2015, was that essentially each party should be put in the position they were before. I ordered several items from Sainsburys clothing range and returned two items back as I had ordered duplicate sizes. I paid postage to have the items arrive to me and then they requested I pay to have them sent back. I assumed the return postage would be returned back to me but it wasn't. I was told they don't do return postage refunds if I only send back part of the order. I've never heard of this.

Your understanding is a little "off".
Firstly it's the Consumer Contracts (Information, Cancellation & Additional Charges) Regulations 2013 that apply.
Secondly, check the T&Cs of the contract - they probably say that the consumer is responsible for returns costs for change of mind returns (which is what this is) ... the only way they would be liable for such costs is if either a) they don't have such a clause, and/or b) they didn't send you the T&Cs in a durable means (i.e. in an email is durable; a link to website T&Cs in an email is not).
Thirdly, they are correct with respect to refunding the initial delivery cost - unless you returned the entire order then they're not liable to refund any of the initial delivery cost.
And finally (to blow your mind), even if you'd returned the whole order - if you'd paid extra for enhanced delivery then they'd only be liable to refund the standard delivery cost.1 -

Returns & refunds
Yes, as long as you are returning within 30 days and you are returning all the items in your order together. If you only return part of your order, we will not refund your original delivery charge. If your item is faulty, we will refund your delivery charge.
In line with our returns policy, please ensure items are unused and in their original packaging with tags still attached alongside your proof of purchase, such as your store receipt, delivery note or order confirmation email.

I was aware of the enchanted delivery bit - which is fair enough. It was the first time I've ordered clothes from them so never had this issue. I've ended up paying £7.00 to return two items (worth less than £20.00) so had I been aware of the policy, I probably would have just returned the whole order/ ordered elsewhere.
At least I know now, so thank you.2
