Joint Mortgage, one with default

Options
My partner and I were in a position to start looking for a home. We have a decent deposit and a combined income of 55k a year, with no debt.
This summer I defaulted on an Argos store card. Stupidly I forgot to change address, bought something on a buy now pay later plan and didn't know my direct debit had been cancelled for being dormant by my bank. I know I should have changed the address, I know I should have checked my bank statement. It was for a silly amount of £110 and I've kicked myself (very hard) since. Sleepless nights, the lot! As soon as I became aware, I called and 10 minutes later it was paid in full. I requested a SAR from Argos and will (with very little hope) send a letter to Argos asking for any possibility of them making a gesture of goodwill to have this removed. I know there is very little chance of this happening.
So, does anybody have any success stories or advice to share about securing a mortgage with a default? I feel like I've let my partner down and possibly set our plans back years. My partner has a squeaky clean credit file and I did until now.
If you can share your advice or experience, I'd be really grateful.  Thanks :)

  • This is placeable on the high street so you can stop panicking. Many lenders have a lower default limit under which they ignore defaults as long as they are settled.  As an example one high lenders criteria is a single default of under £200 and settled will be ignored.
You can stop kicking yourself. Use a broker. If you don't have a broker some of us who post here are independent brokers and we are identifiable by our signatures. We are not allowed to approach posters but most of us are happy to respond to pm's asking for help

Thanks for your helpful post and for helping to put my mind a rest. Given that the deafult is recent, I'd had it lodged I'd have to wait at least 3 or 4 years. Thanks again.
  • Not at all. At under £200 this can be placed on the high street as long as it is satisfied
