You can pay HMRC online but first you must contact the Future Pension Centre to confirm which years will be worth buying. They are likely to say post 2016 years but you must make sure. They will then give you the appropriate number to ring HMRC as you need a reference number to make the online payment. HMRC will ask if you have confirmed the years with the DWP.
How do I contact the Future Pension Centre?
    Online or by phone?
    Is the FPC the DWP?
Most of my savings are tied up in a 3 year bond with the Egyptian bank, which expires at the end of January,
I am not going to renew it.
I don't have 3000 pounds in my Nationwide Flex account and Egyptian current account, so will have to wait till January.
Will they back date it to 15 November?
    Thanks

So I have to phone the Future Pension Centre first.
Where do I find the number of the FPC to phone them?
    Then phone HMRC.
HMRC will ask if I have confirmed with the DWP?
Who is the DWP if I haven't contacted them?

The Future Pension Centre is part of the DWP - ie Department of Work and Pensions.

As to whether it’s backdated, I’ve never been able to find an answer to that question. When you ask would you please report back on what they tell you?

I know of a case of the old scheme where a person already receiving SP was able to pay enough previous years to bring the pension up to full BSP  (gave an extra £25 a week I think) - paid in August around five years ago and new amount commenced in November - received eleven weeks of  arrears in a lump sum.

Is it really necessary to phone the FPC?
Can I not just phone HMRC and say I want to pay the 3133 pounds after 2016?

Yes it is necessary as HMRC will ask you. Up to you if you want to lie to them.
