Joint Tenancy severance

I am trying to change ownership from joint tenancy to tenancy in common but this is proving to be rather expensive with charges ranging from £200 - £260. Can you recommend a cheaper reliable firm to help?

It is a legal change, a few hundred pounds is not expensive and it needs to be done properly.1

You need to do serve the joint tenant with notice that severs the joint tenancy even if the legal title is not changed.
The legal change is to add a form A restriction to the land registry, they have guidance on how to do that and what you need to submit
