Parking management company

My husband was issued with a ticket in Hartlepool a couple of months ago. It wasn’t him that was driving the car it was me. We came down from Scotland as my husband had a job At the docks, so I went to find somewhere to get a coffee. I parked at the mariner where there were an abundance of spaces, spotted the payment machine but I had no coins, it didn’t accept cards and I couldn’t download the app. I did noticed on the sign that the first 1/2 hr was free parking. So i got my coffee and headed back to the car, completely forgetting about the 1/2 hr free parking. I sat in my car till it was time to collect my husband from work As id nowhere else to go. Id been there for maybe 2 hours.
A few weeks later he received a fine and photographs of me driving in and out of the carpark. It doesnt show my face just my arms. Can i ignore this notice or should i contact them with my reasons and offer to pay a day rate. I missed the £60 fine and have been issued another letter with £100. Both amounts in my opinion are excessive especially as I was sat in the car.

Perhaps posting in the Parking forum rather than in spotted a local money saving bargain forum  would get more replies?
