Don't buy a new printer-do this!!

We have always bought Epson printers. We have 2 in the house. In the last few years when they have come up with an error message saying'take to epson for repair'or similar-we have always just gone out and bought a new one as they are not that expensive.
Well, a few weeks ago my daughter's printer suddenly stopped working and within a week so did mine.
I was looking on ebay under'epson printer' thinking i would buy a 2nd hand one when i came across a fabulous product. For £5.99 we bought a disk which resets your printer back to its new state-just like that.We were sceptical at first but thought 'what the heck' it's only £5.99 and the write up was really good.
It was like magic-2 printers back to normal working order. Also it explains how the printer will tell you that it is out of ink when in fact it has plenty left in the cartridges.
I believe Epson(and prob other printer manufacturers) build in a finite life into these printers(say 5000 prints) and then they come up with an error message. You then either take it in for 'repair' or buy a new one-both cost the same money virtually.Of course it's not a repair at all-all they do is reset the printer-takes 5 mins and charge you £40.I think it's a con and maybe Watchdog should look into it.

I wait until the ink has run out ie, half the page is missing until I change my cartridge. Ive got a Canon i250 and have noticed that the computer is telling me that it has run out when it can still print offloadsI remember when this was just a little website! :money:0

To Deanos, I've just downloaded this programme, not used it yet so dont know how useful it is, but I'm having a good laugh reading it. The translation is bizarre.

had to urgently buy a new black cartridge cos it would nt even start up without an error..... now every now and then the it whirs and grinds and then the printer cartridges get stuck and needs a gentle pull on the cables to move the heads....

As we use more black and white we invested in a Brother hl2030 laser printer at about £50 +p.p and vat. Price of toner (not original) is about 0.3p per page compared to our epson at about 1.5p. Soon get the money back and a better print(no smudging or running )I'd rather be an Optimist and be proved wrong than a Pessimist and be proved right.0

The official reason for a finite life time is that within the printer there is a foam pad that soaks up excess ink, once the printer has registered that the programmed amount of ink has been used it assumes the pad is full.
The ink pads can be changed but its ver y messy and if you just reset the counter without changing the pad sooner or later it will overflow in to the printerI no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. My views are my own reading of the law and you should always check with the local authority in question.0 -
Is it legal to program printers to stop after a certain number of prints....?

cant see why its not legal, although the printer companies discourage itI no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. You can remove the foam pads and clean then - this is what I do, they just peel out if you're gentle with them. Using re-filled cartridges from Rambox and the SSCIG utility, I've saved a small fortune.
Removing the foam can be a little messy - if you don't want ink on your fingers wear some rubber gloves. Wash them in warm soapy water, rinse to get the soap out and leave to air dry. That DiDi 7 stuff used to be good at getting rid of ink didn't it? Maybe worth trying.0
