Business mileage tracker

Hi
I’m hoping someone can help.
My employer has instructed the reps to use the Drivers note app for tracking the business fuel mileage.
My question is that as my vehicle is a private one can they insist that I use the app firstly?
Secondly they want us to use the live tracking side of Drivers note and iuse the automatic logging ibeacon, again can they enforce this as it is a private vehicle?
I cannot turn if the tracker only state it’s personal mileage.

i don't see why the vehicle being private has anything to do with it. i assume your employer has stipulated how they want the mileage recorded to validate mileage claims from you. if this is the case, then what objections do you have to doing so?0

That I don’t want a tracker permanently in my vehicle0

you state it is a tracking app, so is it installed on your mobile phone or is there a separate device that has to be fitted into the car?Chunk_tack said:That I don’t want a tracker permanently in my vehicle0 -
There doesn’t appear to be a physical device in the car on the app the OP mentions. It just uses GPS and creates reports for the employer.AskAsk said:

the company cannot insist you use something in your private car. They also don’t have to pay you for business miles not recorded using the app they request. I’m not sure of your reasons for not wanting to use it. There is no tracker, and if you are on business during work then you should be using the apps they want, not the ‘iBeacon’ app of your choosing.
I don’t understand the last line of your post about not being able to turn but if you can’t turn your car with this tracker on then indeed that would be concerning...

i read it to mean that he objects to using the app because it invades on his privacy as it would record his movement during non business hours. but if it is an app, then the OP would be able to turn it off when he clocks off work. which was why i asked if it was a device that was fitted into his car, as they may have no off function. in which case it would be unreasonable for the employer to insist that such a device be installed as it would invade on his privacy.KatrinaWaves said:

The reports are customisable, so you could remove everything outside of work hours. I also think you have to manually start the tracker as there’s a section which says ‘forgot to track a trip? You can manually enter a trip’ so it can’t possibly be always on.AskAsk said:

i see. in which case, then OP, you would have to use what they have stipulated if you want to claim business mileage. i can't see why you would have any objection to using the app if you are already using a similar app to track your distance travelled during business hours.KatrinaWaves said:

Use of the app for business mileage could actually be beneficial to the OP. The company may have expected mileage between A & B so an diversion from that mileage would need to be accounted for. Extra miles due to road closures etc could be evidenced.

looks like you press Start at the start of a business trip and press Stop and the end. This then calculates the business mileage. You don't need to have it on for private journeys
If you were not using the App then I assume you would be providing your employer with the details of travelling from A to B, this appears to do the calculation of the mileage for you.
