I don't wear glasses buy my hubby does.  He used to go to Specsavers but the one day he refused to deal with them ever again as he has bifocals and the member of staff tried to put a trainee in charge of his glasses that had never done bifocals.  Hubby heard the trainee say " but I haven't been trained on bifocals yet" and the senior member of staff said "oh you'll be fine".  Hubby immediately said that he wouldn't have a trainee dealing with him as he only has one pair of eyes and left the shop.   He now goes to Asda at Minworth and has found them very good.

I've always found Specsavers really really helpful (even mending glasses not bought from them!)
I don't have any during /since Covid experience but I certainly had a test last year when no new glasses were needed.
I'm pretty sure it is a franchise- our shop was (maybe still is) always busy. I think we also have 2 independent opticians.
Being polite and pleasant doesn't cost anything!

However I think they are entitled to refuse to test somebody if they suspect that might happen.
Not allowed if it is an NHS test interestingly as breach of contract terms but they might find intresting ways to rebook you for a few monthes later
