Are any of those previous unfilled years from 2006-7 onwards ? If so are any part full ? Making up pre 2016 years to 30 cannot fail to add value. If no contracted out statement and no COPE amount shown then more can be filled. Even better if you were self employed in that time.

I'm not sure that I need to understand all that detail because in the end that document just refers me back to the government website. And it doesn't go into depth on voluntary contributions.
Sorry - the latest version (above) is not nearly as detailed as this one
See page 6 of the above.

2006-7, 2007-8 and 2018-19 are not full. The rest are though. I'm not sure how to fill them though. I did contract out of SERPS.

I'm inclined to write to the NI office with their form to make voluntary contributions, stating that I wish to make Class 2 contributions, explaining how I am self-employed and asking if they can complete any missing payments for 2018 onwards.0

OK, finally got through and it seems to be sorted. I can't pay Class 2 going back to 2007-8 only Class 3 so I'll forget that year. I can pay Class 2 18/19 and 19/20 now. For future years after the end of the tax year I can phone them up and ask for the amount to pay and they'll send me a form to pay it. If I want to pay by direct debit then I have to file a tax return. But that takes longer than phoning them up so it's not worth it.1
