Change to contracted hours

I work in a restaurant and on Tuesday they announced all existing contracts would be cut to just 6 hours a week with the explanation if we had to close due to Covid-19 they wouldn’t be able to cover the wages through the new job retention scheme should the business require? Are they within their right to do that?

What does your contract say ?
The restaurant is trying to survive and cutting hours is one of them, you still have a job, consider looking for another job if you want to earn some more.
