Maternity pay

SMP ends 30/12/20 so I have asked my employer if I can take all of January 2021 off without pay then tag my accrued holiday pay onto the end. I am entitled to 5.6 weeks annual leave and holidays run from 1/4/20 to 31/3/21. My employer has said that I can't add unpaid leave onto the end of my SMP and I can only take annual leave that I have accrued to the end of December. Are they right? Thanks

Statutory maternity leave lasts for up to 52 weeks. When did your leave start?

As above as the start and finish dates are the important ones - however:
Your employer can refuse unpaid leave requests
Your employer can mandate when you do/don't take your annual leave (with certain limitations)0
