3).  That should be relatively easy to resolve providing you have details of all his accounts and interest paid etc.  What do you mean by demand for payment?  Tax for 2019:20 isn't normally due until 31 January 2021 at the earliest.  Have you (he) received a P800 or PA302 calculation or something else?

Sorry, you're right,  it's not actually a demand, It's a 'Tax calculation for the year 2019-2020'.

It's a P800, so it does say that the underpayment will be collected via paye so that's ok.

I've spoke to hmrc and they tell me that the untaxed savings interest figure is obtained from banks/bs, so I did them a disservice - it's not a guess. So they are probably correct and I am just missing some accounts and statements. As it's going to take a while to track these down, I'm going to leave it there for now.

I'd still like to understand how the old age related personal allowances were affected by income if anyone can explain.

    Thanks for the help.

The age related personal allowance was reduced by £1 for each £2 that taxable income exceeded a given amount. For the tax year 2015/16 that amount was £27,700 and for the 2014/15 year it was £27,000. The most it could be reduced by was back to the standard personal allowance.
