Call the Future Pensions place on 0800 7310175 and they will tell you which years it's worth paying for. Then call NI on 0300 2003500 or use the online chat if you can find it. They will tell you how much to pay and how to pay giving you a reference number. I have found it's not difficult to contact them at the moment.

    At 6/4/16

    NI years/30 x £119.30  + (Additional State Pension - deduction  for Contracting Out {if applicable})

    (NI years/35  x £155.65) - COPE (if applicable)

Your starting amount was the higher of the two.

Is a COPE shown on your forecast?

How many years did you have at 6/4/16?

    See page 6 here
    https://www.royallondon.com/siteassets/site-docs/media-centre/good-with-your-money-guides/topping-up-your-state-pension-guide.pdf

And check with Future Pensions as above.

Is there not a third figure and "you can improve your forecast" and "is the most you can get" statements ?
  • Hi all, yes there is a third figure of £175 if I choose to pay another 5yrs, some years need £200, some need £500, some need £700 can I choose the lower amount years to make up the shortfall, Thanks everyone.

Providing those pre 2016 years will add to your pension amount then yes any of them will do so choose the cheapest.  If you are currently working and paying NI then this 2020-21 year could already be full but you won't know until next year.  You could pay 4 and leave one, you have until April 2023 to pay for pre 2016 years so no rush as you missed the boat to get them at the bargain pre April 2019 prices.
You can contact the FPC to get the definitive answer. https://www.gov.uk/future-pension-centre
You then need to contact HMRC to arrange for payment, the old cheque and letter method is not currently available. https://www.gov.uk/pay-voluntary-class-3-national-insurance
