Can you help me work out my wage please?

Good Morning Friends,
My question actually relates to Mr Frogs wages not my own. He is unwell and has a certificate from the GP so his boss has put him on SSP.
Last week was the first payment of SSP. He got £38.34 SSP . Boss explained that it doesn't kick in until after day 3 so that's fine. He also got a + £40.60 in the PAYE column of the payslip so he actually took home £78.94.
This week I was expecting the £95.85 SSP. He got that but also +£28.80 in the PAYE column making £124.65.
I have asked his boss what the 'refund' or 'rebate' of PAYE is, but she doesn't know? She said she just puts the info into the Computer and it works it out?
His Year To Date figure is £13,797.86 . I was wondering if it's something to do with Tax back but I don't really know what I'm talking about?? He has gone over the yearly allowance hasn't he? Again, I don't know what I'm talking about do I?
Any know what this extra PAYE money is please?

It is a tax refund. PAYE tax is (usually) deducted based on what you have earned at each pay day.
On the most common tax code of 1250L you can earn £240/week before any tax is payable.
So now he is getting less than £250 he is due a bit of tax back.
The reason it is £28.80 is because the weekly tax free amount is £240.55 and he only earned £95.85. So didn't use £144 of his tax allowances. £144 x 20% (his tax rate) is £28.80.
This will continue each week he earns less than £240 (exact amount dependent on what he does earn).2 -
Oh God you clever old thing!! Thank you!
So if he stays on the SSP for several weeks (he will have to due to ongoing hospital treatment) it will be the SSP plus the £28.80 each week?Say it once, say it loud ~ I'm an Atheist, Anti-Royalist, Socialist, Tea-Total Veggie Frog and PROUD!:D

Providing it is £95.85 and he has still paid sufficient tax then yes.
