Out of Work Ex Student

My youngest son is back home now (aaargh!) having received his BSc Hons from Brighton. He tells me that hes searching for jobs in our local Berkshire area and had a couple of opportunities lost in London due to them not liking the distance he is away although his aim is to eventually move to London when he has enough saved to do so.
Anyway, I've said to him that shouldn't he be 'signing on', and I took a look at the Government website today out of curiosity and all I could see there were ways to claim if either you have a disability or if you've been employed in the past 6 months. In ancient times, didn't we used to have 'the dole office' where you went in and signed up for unemployment benefit? I realise things have changed since I was a teen but surely there must be a way for him to receive something from the Government to cover living, at least something towards travel and subsistence expenses for job interviews?

Thanks in anticipation of any replies

He can claim UC. It's done online.

He wont be entitled to much
  • Assuming under 25 years old he’ll get 342.72 per month. That is of course depending on his circumstances in relation to eligibility and savings.

Any reason your son can't do his own research? Seems a waste of a degree if he can't even do a bit of googling for himself - he needs to have some scraps of self worth, which is going to be tough enough for him in the months to come.

But it will entitle him to other things, such as cheap glasses, dental treatment etc.

If he's serious about wanting a job, he needs to get applying for anything and everything. Sadly now isn't the time to narrow the field to what you hope to do.

When DS2 got a job in London, I put him on a train to go and live in a hostel until he found somewhere more permanent. Plus many many people commute from Brighton to London (although I think that's the train service which is SO abysmal people are moving away in their droves.

So if he wants to move to London, I suggest he makes it clear in his applications that that is his intention, and that he's willing to move there at short notice if a job is offered.

plus something on the radio earlier today that rents are becoming more competitive, because more and more people are WFH and therefore finding they can move out to cheaper areas!
