Free NHS Eye Tests

Hi, I recently had a free NHS eye test, had and glasses reglazed  by another company.  The distance glasses seem fine however the reading glasses are not.  When I try to read the computer screen my vision because blurred, the same thing happens when I try to read a news paper unless I hold it pretty close my face.  The optical company suggests that prescription is too high. and suggested I have another test for reading.   Should I go back to the company who did the original eye test or try and ask for retest or try another opticians?   Are far as I'm aware you can only have one free NHS eye test every 2 years.
Many thanks I anyone can advise

  • It happens time and time again!
People tend to hold the reading eyetest card far too close compared with how they read in the real world. Amazingly opticians often fail to point this out, leading to over strong glasses. Fine for very intricate needlework or engineering but hopeless for everyday life!
  • Thanks for that, I understand what has happened now.  On this occasion I was not given the card to read myself,  the optician held card the himself, he must have his own judgement not mine.   Is it best to go back to optician the for another eye test , a  its their mistake?

Normally the Optician that you purchased the lenses from will recheck your prescription, and change the lenses for you if necessesary, regardless of where you had the original eye examination. It's because that is where you made the purchase from.
  • It is for the person who makes up the specs to determine where the reading is set. The Prescription indicates the maximum close power required.
If you are not using varifocals then a single pair may not be suitable for both VDU and reading
Whoever supplied the specs should do the retest or refund you if they can't.
