Could you not rearrange the delivery or ask for it to be dropped off at a neighbour, or was it a three-piece suite or other furniture?

"ould you not rearrange the delivery or ask for it to be dropped off at a neighbour"

I was thinking that. Strikes me as a reasonable middleground if possible (I think most couriers offer re-arrangement too) so the courier might actually be a more flexible option than trying to get work to bend.

Also, you mention going in 'first thing' before the children arrive, my experience of couriers/royal mail etc varies little in one aspect  - late late late! could you not take a calculated gamble that you might be back before it even gets delivered?

Problem is, regardless of the true importance of the delivery to you, I can't see refusing a relatively reasonable request is likely to sit well with the employer who will likely jusit see it as 'they won't come and help us out because their personal affairs is more important' (which in some respects is true) but that tends to stick in the mind of managers

Well actually, they shouldn’t ask me to go in at all. It was agreed (recorded in the minutes from a virtual meeting) that I would work from home as it was not safe for me to go to work (after completing a risk assessment) and that they would give me notice if they required me to go in. They emailed me at 3:30pm and asked me to go in the following day.
Why do you think that's unreasonable?
    Because she’s a teacher.

unless it was specified exactly how much notice then they did give you notice
A week’s notice is what was agreed, although I had said that if I was able to go in earlier than that then of course I would. The reason for this notice was for several reasons, one was to ensure measures were put in place for my safety and to avoid busier days and secondly due to childcare as I’d have to arrange for someone else to take my son to school due to the time of the morning I’d have to leave for work.
As these didn’t apply, though, you didn’t need the notice. I know that Teachers do tend to feel that they aren’t like other workers, but do you honestly think that it’s reasonable to not do the work that you are being paid for as you preferred to wait in for a delivery?
  • And theres the likes of me, rang at 9pm to be asked to start back at 7am the following day

As I was on furlough the answer of course was Yes.

WFH, or Furlough, you are being paid and are still available to your boss. You said you weren't because you needed to stay home for a delivery - that is surely a days paid holiday or unpaid leave.

No matter which way you argue it, you were not available when your bosses required you to be

This thread is full of drip feeding information. The first post I assumed was asked on the day itself after completing tasks and not getting paid for it. Now it's a totally different scenerio.

Unfortunately drip feed of relevant information is very common on forums (fora?) such as these.  There is an impression that the person posing the question is assuming that everybody will automatically be on their side.  Only when it becomes apparent to them that this is not the case do they start to feed in more information.
In this instance what was described as 'calling in to pick up work' had morphed into potentially spending much of the day there.
My sister-in-law remained at home on full pay, but had to be available during her usual working hours in case she was needed.  She only received that call once, but planned her days around that possibility.

  • Another drip feeder.

If you wish to keep your job, I’d be following reasonable requests as a minimum, you’ll find the headteacher initiating disciplinary procedures against you.

It was agreed you would not work from your usual place of work, not that you wouldn’t collect stuff to be able to do your job from home, that is a totally different thing altogether and that point could easily be argued.

Giving an excuse related to a personal errand in my book is not acceptable.
