DW Gym taken over by Everlast - problems!!!!

Hello
I have a contract with DW gym 17/10/19 to 17/10/20. They were taken over by Everlast (sports direct) recently.
During lockdown DW confirmed no payment would be due whilst club was closed and they froze all our direct debits.
Since early July I have been enquiring how to cancel on my 12 month membership due date (17/10/20) to ensure I have enough notice and it was recorded on system. No on at DW could help and then it switched hands.
Now Everlast are trying to charge me 2 months for closure during lockdown so I have to pay until December 20 when my original contract taken out with DW ends on 17th Oct.
I don’t wish to use the club and have family shielding so am not going anywhere unnecessary.

I feel it’s unfair for DW to confirm we didn’t have to pay for club closure and then to be bought out and the new company change the rules. I didn’t cancel direct debit DW stopped it.
Please give advice on this. I don’t think I should have to pay for something that was confirmed as waived.
Thanks
Marie

If you have written confirmation i would be assertive in refusing to pay and show that as per the original request you arent and wont be paying and also give your formal cancellation notice on the same letter/email1

You signed up to pay 12 payments, they are expecting 12 payments, but with a 2 month break in the middle. As long as they allow you to use the gym in November & December, it seems reasonable that they want 12 overall payments for the contract you signed up to.
The change in ownership is unrelated.
They are also not trying to get you to pay for the months they were closed.0 -
To cancel look at your contract, what does it say on the Everlast website or just write to them0

In Jan 2020 I paid £410.40 to DW Fitness First Bangor N Wales for 12 months gym membership, so it transferred to Everlast Aug 20, then in May 21 I had an em from Everlast saying they would refund upfront payers as the gym was sold to Fitness First, I am due £315 approx. The em provided in this communication came back as not being monitored, I went into the now rebranded Fitness First gym, they have given me a number which when I call says it is busy, goodbye. I tried Fraser Group Corporate Cust Serv email CS@ Frasergroup this also bounced as not recognised. The website contact em only asks if you are a member or want to become a member and which gym so is unsuitable.
I have now rang Cheltenham Gym as I am used to use that when visiting my family. They have given me an email memberships @everlastfitnessclub.com which has not bounced yet. We will see!0
