Sick Leave

My wife works for the council and is on long term sick. She has nearly exhausted her 6 months full pay and soon will receive half pay.
The question is with employment in the public sector. Do you work a month behind and at the end of your first months sick is that salary normal pay and does the first months sick pay come at the end of your second months sick leave.

    There's no set structure.

Generally public sector will pay you on X date for 1st to last date of the month.

Sick pay activation though is specific to the date it began. So if sick leave began on the 12th, then it will run until the 11th 6 months later.

Most public sector roles I come across you are paid retrospectively, so pay on August 31st  would be for August, pay on Sep 30th would be for September.  But, that doesn't mean it applies to her.  You'd need to check her contract where the exact details of pay and when will be evident, and if no luck, ask a colleague or call her HRBP.
' <-- See that? It's called an apostrophe. It does not mean "hey, look out, here comes an S".

What we've sometimes ended up doing is paying full pay when someone is not entitled to it, and then deducted the overpayment the following month. If someone hands me a Fit Note for the whole month on 1st, I can process that in the 'right' month, but if your entitlement to full pay expires round about the time I'm prepping payroll but it's not clear whether or not you're coming back to work, I'll pay you in full and sort it out the following month.

If your wife KNOWS she won't be back at work then it's worth talking to HR about how their system for salaries works.
